Leadership Greene County - Class of 2008
Graduation & Recognition Ceremony, June 2008
Leadership Greene County is a personal program designed to motivate participants to develop
and enhance the quality of their leadership in addressing pertinent community needs
and implementing them into their everyday lives and work situations.
The purpose of the Leadership Greene County is to:
| • |
Identify potential and existing leaders in business, government and the community and to help them prepare for voluntary leadership roles in their community;
|
| • |
To provide these leaders with a practical and comprehensive understanding of major issues and opportunities facing the Greene County area;
|
| • |
To improve the communications network among leaders from disparate backgrounds and interests;
|
| • |
To create a forum for persons of demonstrated commitment to the community to meet and exchange ideas;
|
| • |
To stimulate increased leadership participation and commitment in the community. The participants in the program are men and women representing a cross section of Greene County and they are selected by the Leadership Greene County Selection Committee. Participants are chosen for their potential or demonstrated leadership abilities and their commitment to school and community. Interaction with this diverse group stimulates and challenges each member. |
Leadership Greene County begins in August with an overnight retreat and continues through May with case study presentations and recognition/graduation ceremonies (date to be announced). Participants are exposed to a variety of viewpoints that illustrate the array of economic, political, educational, and social factors at work in Greene County. They meet with area leaders in business, media, government, education, and service organizations. In addition, participants receive training in leadership effectiveness and human behavior.

Leadership Greene County participants will travel to Tennessee's State Capitol and experience our state government in action at the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee. Travel dates for the two-day trip are scheduled for March 2009, and will be determined by the class participants' schedules and the schedule of the General Assembly.
Tuition is $800 per participant and non-refundable. Included in this are all costs, including the opening retreat, Leadership notebooks and materials, breakfast, travel, Nashville trip, speakers, etc. Sponsors or others may pay up to $750 of the tuition, but the participants must pay at least $50.
Participants must make a commitment to the program. Attendance at each monthly session, including the overnight retreat and Nashville trip, are prerequisites for graduation certification. Participants will be allowed to miss one (1) full day session or two (2) half-day sessions. Participants missing more than one (1) full session or two (2) half-day sessions will be dismissed from the program and fees are non-refundable. Since the graduates of the Leadership Greene County program possess a unique understanding and appreciation of the inner workings of our community, they will be excellent future candidates to serve on local boards, committees and task forces. Graduate profiles will be distributed to community leaders, educational institutions, hospitals or other sources, to encourage involvement with these valuable leadership resources.
As part of the program curriculum, class members divide into groups and do an in-depth study on a topic of their choice, i.e, an issue/concern facing the citizens of Greeneville and Greene County. At the 2008 graduation ceremony, class members presented case studies on the following topics: childhood obesity and what is being done about it in Greeneville and Greene County; the litter issue in Greeneville and Greene County; Illegal Immigration and how it affects the citizens of Greeneville and Greene County; and customer service in Greeneville and Greene County and how it can improved.
Mark Foulks, chief of the Greeneville Fire Department, was honored with the "Outstanding Leadership Award" and Chuck Bowlin with the Greeneville Light & Power System and Rob Ellis with the University of Tennessee Research and Educational Center were honored with the "Oustanding Character Award." Both awards were voted on by class members.
Greeneville and Greene County are directly tied to the quality of their leadership. Leadership Greene County is an affiliate program of the Greene County Partnership. The mission of Leadership Greene County is to identify and prepare the community's future leadership resources. Leadership Greene County will provide a network of current and emerging leaders who possess the skills and the commitment to continue the success of the community.
As part of the continuation of the Leadership Greene County Program, alumni will serve as members of future program and selection committees. They will also be included in a speaker's bureau that will be used throughout the community.
